Special Interests. Not like the groups in Washington D.C. No. Our special interests. We all have them.
That’s a good thing as far as our humanness is concerned. At least, I think so. It adds variety to life. Interest. Spark.
For instance, show me a rock. Just about any rock. I love them. I could spend hours looking at rocks, searching for rocks, gathering and arranging rocks. I have carried more rocks into and around our home… than Mick Jagger rolled a stone.
I can look at rock catalogues. And buy things right out of them. I am intrigued by rocks.
I know this is not for everyone. And that is more than okay, it is brilliant. Not everything is for me either.
For instance, I love to eat plants. But that is where my interest stops with them. I don’t much care about how to grow them, what they look like, or what they are called. I know they are vitally important for our planet, and our ecosystem. So I applaud those people who make their way ….. to make a way for plants. Those garden dwellers, and house-plant growers. But it is not for me.
There are some things too, that I enjoy in general, but not completely. Like music. I love a LOT of different kinds of music. I am moved by, soothed by, invigorated by it. But it largely depends on the genre, and the moment. Most moments…. I am not so crazy about opera, or rap, or even country.
Another thing I am a sucker for is connected to my Geek-Hood. I love technology, and computers, and….. gadgets. I am a bit jealous of Inspector Gadget. You see, we get a LOT of catalogues in the mail, most of which go directly to the Recycling Bin. But the other day, one came from The Sharper Image. Curse you Sharper Image people. Curses, I say.
I just opened it up momentarily, to leaf through, and see what those folks were up to these days. Suddenly, my day was jolted abruptly. I quickly came to the realization that my life could not go on without several items in that good book. Like the 186-Piece Vanadium Tool Set, or the 3-in-1 Heated Neck Massager. What about the Rotating Panorama Smartphone Stand, to the Stainless Steel Electric S’mores Maker.
Oh my god. Somebody tackle me. I don’t even take panoramic photos, and I don’t eat S’mores. Go, Go Gadget Everything.
And then it hit me. It is SO good to have interests in life. To get excited about something you do, or enjoy. It makes us unique. It also makes us better people, I think. When we find something intriguing and we explore fully. But it isn’t the quantitative “how much” we do, or buy or get, of it.
It is the quality of what we do. The quality of who we are. The depth at which are interests are explored. And then, all the better to share with someone who has interest in it too.
So as you move through your day…. just remember this too. What you do…. is what makes you, YOU. And that is completely beautiful. Let me remind you once again…..
You totally rock.
In my garden there is a large place for sentiment. My garden of flowers is also my garden of thoughts and dreams. The thoughts grow as freely as the flowers, and the dreams are as beautiful.
