Good King & I

kingw dove

Well.  Well, well.  I am pretty tired tonight, so I decided to write a little earlier than normal.  But I sat here, and sat.  My brain is just a little on the gray side.  That “matter” part of the “gray” is ready for bed, I think.

So here is what I am thinking.  Since I can’t really think.   You know how in old times, the King of Town would Declare something, and that  made it true… from that day forward?  I am not really the King of any Town, but I AM owner of Kid Wednesday.

So… again… here is what I am thinking.  I will make a Declaration for this date.  Yes, every 28th Day of September… will be “Polly has the night off from writing” Night.  From this day forward.

It only seems fair.  You all need a break from this hab-dashery.  So a great day of celebration for you.  Maybe better than Christmas.

Some other great things have occurred on September 28th, historically. Which makes this all the better.  For instance… in 935….  Saint Wenceslas was murdered by his brother, Boleslaus I of Bohemia.  That is the VERY same dude who is in the Christmas Song.  “Good King Wenceslas looked out ….. On the feast of Stephen.”  Yes  That dude. I only know this, because I was recently in Prague.  And there is a big stinking statue devoted to the guy.  Along with a big old part of the city.

Wenceslaus I…. who was also know as…. Václav the Good was the Duke of Bohemia.

I think this guy is dripping with “Cool.”  I mean… the Duke of Bohemia.  That sounds like a Rock’n’Roll song or something.  Apparently, he was a pretty fair and noble ruler,  and the folks from his kingdom loved him.

But… and there is always a but.  You can’t please all the people all the time.  His little brother was NOT too fond of Mr Big.  So in 935…. that younger brother… named Boleslaus the Cruel… ran him right through with a lance.

These days in Prague.. .. .. they celebrate him there.  His martyrdom quickly elevated his reputation for heroic goodness.  Heck… they even made him a Saint… and posthumously declared that he was King.

Here is a tip from all of this.  IF YOU have a little brother named “Timmy the Cruel”… or “Albert the Cruel”… or “Anything the Cruel”… you may want to hide all the lances in the house.  Seriously.

But back to the beginning.  September 28th seems like a good day to take off.  So… I’ve decided not to write anything at all tonight.

Except for this.  Because this is good too.  Today is Confucius’  Birthday.  Now that guy said some really good things.  And this is one:  “Silence is a true friend who never betrays.”

So there you have it.  The night off.  A little well deserved silence… right out of me.
