Hoosier Mint?

Well, let’s just face it.  I just wasn’t cut out to be a Girl Scout.  Heck, I didn’t even make it in the Brownies for more than one day.  Most of you know that tired, worn out story.  But, here goes. Again.

It was probably during my Second Grade Year.  I decided to give the Brownies a try, and attended my first meeting.  To make a long story short, while sitting in the Brownie  Circle, someone peed, and I ended up sitting in it.  THEN…. I found out we had to pay dues.  After walking home in the freezing cold, with my pee-soaked knee socks frozen to my legs, I decided this wasn’t the life path for me.

I told my Mom I didn’t see the point of paying to get peed on.  But all that aside, I had high expectations going in.  I heard I was joining the Brownies.  At just 7 years of age, I had no real knowledge of what this might be.  My brief encounters with Brownies had been the chocolate kind, in the pan… warm out of the oven… with a glass of cold milk.  So, I thought it had something to do with that.  Imagine my surprise.

Regardless, I couldn’t get past the first day of Brownies, so any thoughts of the ranks of Girl Scouts was merely a pipe dream.  No matter.  I didn’t want to cook, knit, sew, clean, etc., for badges.  It would cut into play time.  I was a thinker, I’ll tell you.  A real thinker.

But Girl Scouts are good.  They do a lot of worthwhile things.  A noble preparation.  And of course, that brings us to the cousin of Brownies….  the Girl Scout Cookies.

Cookies. They have to be one of the best things in life. Once you come across the great cookie…. YOOOUUUUU have come across the great cookie. There are all types and varieties of course. I think probably the national favorite, would be the oooooey-gooooooey chocolate chip cookie. At least that would be my pick.

But back to Girl Scout cookies. We’ve all had them, and I’m sure we all have our favorites.  For me it was the Peanut Butter Cookie.  I think that one is called the Do-Si-Do.  But they weren’t called that when I was a kid.  I used to love those things!

As a nation, different regions have different favorites. I just saw a report today, of the breakdown is the favorite Girl Scout cookies across the nation. Ohio likes thin mints.  It must be a Midwestern thing. Apparently, Thin Mints are the favorite of Indiana, Illinois, West Virginia, Virginia, and Michigan.  They are big in the western states as well. They’re the number one cookie in California, Oregon, Idaho, Nevada, Utah, and Arizona. To name a few. That’s a lot of Thin Minting.

The big state of Texas as well as Georgia, Kentucky, Washington, Pennsylvania, Kansas, Missouri, New Mexico, among a scattering of others, seem to like the caramel delights also known as Somoas.  And North Carolina.  A shout-out to my pal, Roanoke.

Another favorite in the U.S. was the Tagalongs, a Peanut Butter Pattie. They don’t last long in South Carolina, Maine, Alabama, Mississippi, Wisconsin, Montana, and North Dakota.

Only two states picked my Peanut Butter Cookies. Wyoming, and New Hampshire.  Go figure.

My point to all of this?  Well, I don’t really have a point.  Other than I feel a little sorry for the lame cookies….The Shortbreads, Lemonades, Thanks-A-Lots, Savanah Smiles, Trios, and Toffee-tastic.  Yeah.  It makes me feel a little crummy.  For them.

Popular cookies.  Sad, sad, cookies.  You win some, you lose some.
Yep.  That’s the way the cookie crumbles.
Come to think of it… this whole thing seems a little half-baked.  So, I won’t go any further.  You’ve been battered enough already.  I’ve chipped away, and chipped away.  Of course, I’ll never make a mint this way.  Yeah…. I probably should have stayed in the Girl Scout Programs.

So, tonight, I bid you a Good Night.  And may you always have Sweet Dreams.

And…… Have a cookie. Seriously.  Have a cookie.s
